“George Beattie was fitted up”

Both the Daily Record and STV News have today published an interesting story which calls into question, again, the conviction of George Beattie for the murder of Margaret McLaughlin, in Carluke, in 1973.

George Beattie has consistently maintained his innocence of the crime throughout the last 46 years.   Despite widespread doubts about the conviction the Appeal Court has twice refused Mr Beattie’s appeals.  He was released from prison, on licence, after serving 20 years.

In a book to be published this week, criminologist Professor David Wilson insists that George Beattie cannot be guilty, and that he was fitted up by the senior officer investigating the murder, Detective Chief Superintendent William Muncie.  He says that Muncie, who found fame as the detective who brought Peter Manuel to justice, claimed to have psychic powers when it came to solving murders.  Professor Wilson goes on to identify a “more likely suspect”.
